Did you know...?

There were many notable figures aboard the RMS Titanic. People of all types – rich and poor, famous and infamous, politicians and businessmen – could be found within the White Star vessel. Among these people was Major Archibald Butt (pictured to the right). The Major did indeed lose his life when the gargantuan steamer made its final plunge, but his story will not be forgotten.

Major Archibald Butt is best known for two things: (1) He was military aid to American President William Howard Taft; (2) He was one of over a thousand to die in the terrible tragedy which was the Titanic sinking.

He hailed from Augusta, Georgia, and joined the American Army in 1989. He later held the position as president Theodore Roosevelt's military aid. When Taft was appointed as president, Major Butt continued working as Taft's aid. However, a feud between Taft and Roosevelt caused the major a great deal of distress. To improve his deteriorating health his doctor ordered he leave the White House for a while.

Butt agreed to his doctor's orders and happily obliged, booking a trip to Europe to recover. While in Europe he encountered a strange seer who told him he would meet his demise on his returning trip. Fearing the seer was right, Butt wrote his will prior to leaving Europe. After courageously staying to help those still stranded on the boat, Butt – then, aged 46 – went down with the Titanic.
