Getting into the holiday spirit: Did you know...?

The holiday season is something that the world shares. Whether you live in France, England, America, or Germany, you can count on at least one person you know celebrating something during this time of the year. In terms of Christmas, there are many interesting traditions; both the western and eastern world have a multitude of cultural differences. For example, in France, their revillon (dinner after Christmas or Christmas Eve mass) is usually accompanied by their traditional Bûche de Noël (translated to English as Log Cake).

In France, Saint Nick is fondly referred to as Père Noël (Father Christmas). The interesting thing about France's Father Christmas, however, is his companion! In many eastern regions of France Père Noël comes with a peevish companion, clad in black, by the name of Père Fouettard. What's the difference between Fouettard and Noël? Fouettard is known to carry sticks with him, all of them intended for the arse of a naughty French child! So, in France, you better be good; otherwise, you might get a nice whack on the rump!
